Model and High Power Rocket Flight Procedure
- Check and prepare rocket for flight:
- Inspect structural integrity (airframe, fins, launch lugs, etc.)
- Inspect and load recovery system (biodegradable wadding, shock cord, parachute,
etc.
- Select suitable motor(s) and properly secure in rocket
- Check CP/CG relationship
- Fill out a flight data card (one per flight)
- Bring rocket and flight data card to the RSO for inspection, sign-off, and
pad assignment (an unsafe rocket will not be flown).
- Load rocket onto assigned launch pad, set desired launch angle, install
a reliable ignitor into motor, select appropriate launch system ignitor leads
and test for deadness by shorting to each other then connect to the motor
ignitor. Be sure motor nozzle is not resting on pad.
- When the launch pads are loaded with rockets ready for flight the launch
pad area is cleared by the LCO and launch sequence for the rack commences.
The LCO announces owners name, rocket name, motor designation(s), and pad
number prior to launching each rocket. Owners wishing to push the launch button
should alert the LCO prior to announcement.
- Flight characteristics and recovery deployment are noted on the flight card.
Unsuccessful motor ignition is recycled for an immediate second attempt. Unlaunched
rockets are removed from launch pads by owners while rockets with assigned
pad numbers are loaded onto launch pads.
Notes:
- RSO = Range Safety Officer
- LCO = Launch Control Officer (These duties may be performed by the same
person at a given launch)
- Tripoli rules will be observed, unless otherwise stated in advance
- All motors flown must be Tripoli certified
